Competencies to be acquired

The European University Course “Complex Decongestive Therapy” consists of 3 separate modules, which have to be completed in order to graduate as “Complex Decongestive Lymphoedema Therapist”.

The students (medical doctors, physiotherapists, nurses), after successfully finishing all 3 Modules, will have all relevant theoretical and practical knowledge to perform assessment, functional diagnoses and treatment of patients with different types of lymphoedema.

In Module 2 the students

master manual lymphatic drainage with intact lymphatic flow systems.
acquire basic grips and sequences necessary for conducting lymphatic drainage in lymphatic diseases.
learn advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills of compression therapy.
learn treatment procedures and preventive procedures to optimize the relationship between strain and resilience of structures.
learn clinical reasoning on lymphoedema patients.
preserve and promote activities of individual life styles. Get educated in patients’ self – management, bandaging, lifestyle, gymnastics, nutrition and skin care.

Teaching material

After successfully booking the course you will receive a link by e-mail with your personal and individual access code to the online teaching materials for this course on our Moodle platform. The course content and corresponding presentations are unlocked at specified times for the registered course participants.
The IHM E-Cademy is based on the Moodle e-learning platform, which is available worldwide. Teaching videos are located in our own IHM YouTube Channel, to which you will have access via IHM E-Cademy.

Examination

For the students, who participated in CDT Module 1, there will be a written exam 6 weeks prior to CDT Module 2. There is the possibility to repeat the exam 3 weeks prior. If the participant does pass the exam, the student is eligible to proceed to Module 2.

Students, who apply to skip Module 1, need to pass the written exam, a practice test and an online interview with the lecturer. For more information please contact office@ihm.ac.at.

Certificate of participation

The participants will receive a certification of participation by IHM International, the University of Applied Sciences FH Joanneum Graz, Austria and the University Department of Health Studies University of Split, after successfully completing the module, which is the pre-requisite to attend CDT Module 3.

Structure of CDT course

In general the course program consists of 3 modules:

Module 1: Principles of Lymphoedema I – 4 days program
Module 2: Principles of Lymphoedema II – 5 days program
Module 3: Lymphoedema Course Advanced – 3 days program

All 3 Modules have to be successfully completed to finish the course.

Module 4: Train the trainer program for selected candidates – 8 ECTS. Graduates are certified trainers and will be entitled to teach module 1-3.
CDT refresher courses – as every certificate is valid for 2 years, it must be extended by attending an IHM refresher course. These courses are primarily about new developments in the treatment and products, as well as a deep repetition of practical use of the specific techniques you have obtained. Our intention is to conduct these refresher courses online.

Certificates

The graduation certificate, after passing all 3 Modules, will be from the University of Applied Sciences FH Joanneum Graz, Austria and the University Department of Health Studies University of Split, which gives the graduate the title “Complex Decongestive Lymphoedema Therapist”.

Additionally every participant receives a Certificate of Participation from IHM International, which proofs your attendance at the mentioned course and allows to register for refresher courses. Each certificate is valid for 2 years and has to be extended by visiting a refresher course.

Entrance Criteria

Candidates with the following pre-requisites are qualified to apply for the admission procedure:

completed university studies in medicine
or completed undergraduate studies in physiotherapy
or completed undergraduate studies in nursing science
and the candidate needs to be legally allowed to treat patients.

Module 2:

Successfully pass Module 1 and the entry exam for Module 2
Students with previous experience might be eligible to proceed to Module 2. Students, who apply to skip Module 1, need to pass the written exam, a practice test and an online interview with the lecturer. For more information please contact office@ihm.ac.at.

Admission

The admission criteria will be checked by IHM International and together with our academic partners, the admission procedure will be processed.

Tuition fee

The cost structure and the determination of the fee are depending on national structures and network partners. The fee includes the following services:

National and international trainers
Access to our e – learning platform
Tutoring
Study material
Product samples for practical training
Teaching venues and technical equipment
Catering during coffee breaks and lunch time
Welcome dinner (registration necessary – please see pre-registration form)
Obligatory fees from national chambers/professional associations

The tuition fee does not include:

Accomodation and breakfast
Dinner, except the welcome dinner
Travel costs
Transportation from hotel to the teaching venue and back

Workload and mode of studies

- Module 1 has to be done by face-to-face training. Under certain circumstances it can be set up as an online training.
- Modules 2 and 3 have to be done by face-to-face training.
Concerning the workload, we are following the European Credit Transfer System. 1 ECTS point equals 25h workload for the student.

Between the modules 1-3 the students have to complete practice periods where they need to treat specific indications given by the University. The students are obligated to prepare a minimum of 3 case reports for examination, more details will follow during the modules.
